The Fourth

You may not know this, but I am a big fan of the number 4-- I was married on December 4th, my dog is 4 years old, my husband was born in April (the 4th month) and I once won twenty dollars on the number four playing roulette in Atlantic City. My birthday is August 2nd, but I figure 2 plus 2 equals 4 so I still feel good about maintaining my love of the number four.

The fourth of July is no exception. Sure, the fireworks are great and all, but what I really love is celebrating a summer holiday with friends and family.

I began my weekend by volunteering at OLD NAVY on Saturday. They paired up with a wonderful organization called Operation Care and Comfort which operates through the American Red Cross. It sends monthly care packages to adopted military units while serving overseas. I donated a few hours of my time to help kids write letters to the millions of soldiers serving our country. It was really the least I could do.

Of course I have always felt loyal to those who are in the military, but this year was a little more personal for me. Not only did my future-brother-in-law just return from Iraq, but I have been more than touched my the inspiring blogs of those wives and girlfriends enduring this difficult lifestyle. I was particularly moved by

Once again, hope you don't mind the copying and pasting :)

On Saturday night, DP and I got to enjoy our first fireworks together--EVER, as he has had to work every 4th of July since we have been dating. Naturally I got a tad over-excited and packed an XL cooler full of only the the essentials- beer, Combos, Twizzlers, Peanut M'n'Ms, and Alaskan King Crab Legs (don't ask!) for a ten-minute fireworks display at the local high school. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail, right?

Needless to say, DP opted to enjoy his Alaskan King Crab Legs later that night when we got home, but he appreciated my efforts, of course. What?! you act like I didn't pack the eight piece cracker set. Give me some credit.

On Sunday, I got to see my favorite NY twins on the beach for a couple of hours, followed by a fabulous home-cooked meal with my mama. We decided to forgo the fireworks that night and instead, make a trip to WAWA and split a Skinny Cow Ice Cream Sandwich. Go big, or go home, right?

I hope you all enjoyed your fourth of July weekend as much as I did.

xoxo, Mac
