Picture in your mind the two girls fighting above. Now minus the boxing gloves and add two hair weaves on my floor and voilĂ ... you have a scene from my classroom this afternoon.
Now don’t get me wrong, I have seen my fair share of fights in this district, but this is the first time I have ever had my very own girl fight in my classroom.
Looking back, my reaction appeared to be in slow motion.
Through the usual afternoon chaos I heard faint echoes of
“Do it then. Do it. A’ight then. Do it.”
And then perhaps the word “bitch” followed closely by “Imma get on you.”
To be honest the word bitch didn’t faze me. As I rose from my desk to correct my most despised incorrect grammar phrase of the month (Imma), I found myself to be in the midst of more than just my typical syntax nightmare. (I mean is it really too much to ask to separate the words I, am, going and to? Since when do we combine 4 words together to form a contraction? All I have to say is thank you Kanye. It’s bad enough you screwed up Taylor’s speech but now you’re messing with my plan to teach proper English)

I pushed through the large circle of students that had now formed around the two girls to get a good look at the unfolding brawl. I had to pause before I reacted because what I didn’t realize was that girls don’t actually punch each other. In fact, they don’t even form a fist. Their hands move quickly but always in the motion of slapping or pulling. As I entered the ring I felt a bit like I was inside that last part of the car wash where those giant rubber strips slap your car around until it’s dry. Only, I wasn’t protected my exterior of my vehicle.

I ended up yanking the hood of the larger girl’s sweatshirt in an attempt to remove her from the fight. I’m not sure why I thought this was a good plan, but it worked and soon security had the other girl restrained. I spent the rest of the afternoon sweeping up hair
Just to keep you informed...

1. imma
Used in place of "I am going to..." Technically should be spelled i'mma but since this is a shortened version, we leave out the apostrophe!
Ricky said, "Imma get myself a power drink and a snack, and I'll be right back."
Oh jeez, sounds like a fun day. I at least once a week try to convince teenage girls that fighting is unclassy and incongruent to their goals.
ReplyDeleteI asked a girl one time, who do you like up to? She replied with Keri Hilson and Rosa Parks.
Umm cool. Do you think they would want to fight other girls? Please, please see my point I was thinking. haha.
